All local councils will be dissolved on January 10, the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) decided yesterday at Temple Trees meeting chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and attended by leaders of the constituent parties, a government official said.

The elections to Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas are expected to be held in March.

Meanwhile a UPFA spokesman said the party had appointed a national level nomination board representing all constituent parties of the government and 25 district nomination boards to interview applicants.

He said interviews will begin on January 5 and applications for nominations must reach the party headquarters before that date. He said to prevent malpractice, a special party official would be appointed to each district to handover nominations to the returning officer.

However, the government will present the Local Authorities Elections Amendment Bill in parliament on January 4 but there were doubts it would be approved in parliament.
