Misdeeds during postal voting: UNP

The main opposition UNP yesterday complained to Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake regarding several incidents that had taken place in some areas during the postal voting of the local government elections which began yesterday.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a news conference that in some areas its party agents were not allowed to enter locations where the marking of postal votes were taking place.

The Daily Mirror learns that the UNP polling agent had not been allowed in the Pallekelle army camp postal voting centre while another incident had taken place in the Yatiyantota Pradeshiya Sabha area.Mr. Attanayake said the party had officially informed the Commissioner of Elections about the situation. Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) said today that state sector employees should use their postal votes wisely.

UNP spokesperson and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatileka told a press conference that postal voting that commences tomorrow will be a crucial point for state sector employees.

Police arrest UNP members for assaulting pregnant ruling party candidate

Sri Lanka police today arrested an opposition United National Party (UNP) candidate and three members of the party for assaulting a pregnant ruling United People's Freedom Party candidate for the Mahara Pradeshiya Sabha in Kadawatha.

The suspects have been produced in the Gampaha Magistrate's Court today. The court has ordered to remand the three suspects until March 11.

A UNP candidate, Indika Bandara is reportedly a suspect in the attack, the police have revealed.

The assaulted candidate, Sujeewa Chandani has been admitted to the Ragama Teaching Hospital following the attack in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, women from the Mahara electorate staged a protest today condemning the attack on a pregnant woman.(Read More)

 

   
As violence intensify, police reduced to helpless onlookers - Karu

The attack by goons wielding automatic weapons on the Walasmulla election meeting organized by Sajith Premadasa is characteristic of an unpopular government resorting to silence democratic expression through the bullet, UNP deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya says in a statement. It appears to be the ‘policy’ of the government to unleash thugs armed with automatic guns and crow bars to target unarmed opposition UNP activists, as clearly evident by the Walasmulla incident, he said.

Referring to the previous attack on a UNP candidate whose hand was cut by a UPFA contender at Beruwala, Jayasuriya charged that the police have been reduced to helpless onlookers as violence unleashed by government goons intensified.(Read More)

   
UNP queries EC’s action on missing 2010 Presidential Election ballot papers

The UNP yesterday asked the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake to reveal as to what action he had taken regarding the detection of valid ballot papers cast for General Sarath Fonseka at the 2010 Presidential Election,inside a drain near the Ratnapura Technical College.

The Deputy leader of the UNP leader Karu Jayasuriya in a communication to Dissanayake requested that the public be informed of the outcome of his inquiry if any,into the the missing ballot pappers that had been cast in favour of Fonseka,prior to conducting the forthcoming,Local Government Polls. UNP application dismissed

The Court of Appeal yesterday dismissed the Writ Application, filed by UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, challenging the acceptance of the UPFA nominations to contest the Town Council of Chilaw at the March 17 local government elections. The petition said that the youth candidate, Chalindu Diman de Silva, was underage and his name was not included in the electoral list of 2008.

The Court upheld a preliminary objection taken by the Counsel for the UPFA, Nihal Jayamanne PC, and dismissed the Writ Application. (Read More)
   
Susil questions UNP LGE campaign strategy

The government yesterday charged that the UNP had no direction or target in its local government election campaign but instead was groping in the dark and making tasteless and useless allegations against the UPFA for its survival.

UPFA General Secretary and Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha said the strategy of the UNP was so contradictory that it has withdrawn its petitions in the Court of Appeal filed against the rejection of nominations of the UNP for certain local government bodies and has filed another petition for accepting the nominations for fulfilling the same legal requirement.
