Election law violations in Beruwala increase: Rule of law undermined

The activities of an outside party have increased election law violations in Beruwala making it one of the areas where election laws are most violated. Five incidents of election related violence have been reported after nominations were handed and two United National Party (UNP) candidates  have been admitted to hospital after they were brutally assaulted by a United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) poltician. 

CaFFE has discovered that this group has been brought to Beruwala by a UPFA politician. Although various complaints have been made to the highest police authorities in Kaluthara District, Police have turned a blind eye to the activities of this group. (Read More)

   
UNP Beruwala candidate attacked

The United National Party (UNP) candidate of the Beruwala Urban Council was hospitalised after being allegedly attacked by United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) supporters in the Kalutara district.

Former Western Provincial Council Member A.M.Yoosuf told Daily Mirror yesterday that the victim - Mohamed Arafath - was allegedly assaulted by a group headed by UPFA candidate Milfer Wazeer, who is also contesting the forthcoming local government elections. (Read More)
   
Vote us or suffer

“Either you vote us or suffer” is the new motto of Sri Lanka’s ruling UPFA party’s local Government election campaign. President Mahinda Rajapakse’s lieutenant Wimal Weerawansa told the voters that they will be left with a local Government that can enjoy riding a heavy vehicle round the village if the opposition is given power in their local government.

Another said that the Government will appoint their own commissioners to go against the local Government body elected by the people. This is perhaps the most direct threat that the Government would go against the will of the voters. (Read More)

   
UNP launches LG polls campaign in Jaffna

The UNP on Thursday (17) launched its Local Government Elections campaign in the Northern Province by distributing equipment to fishermen in Velvettithurai, Jaffna. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told The Island, that their northern campaign was being spearheaded by Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya MP, whose team includes, among others, himself and Jayalath Jayawardena, MP.

UNP doing its best to curb election violence

The main Opposition United National Party (UNP) yesterday accused government candidates of blatantly misusing public property for election propaganda. It said that this kind of abuse and election law violations had systematically increased since the 2008 provincial council elections.

Less apply for postal voting

A total of 321,000 persons had applied for postal voting at the forthcoming local government elections, a spokesman for Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said.

He said the number was much less than earlier elections, probably due to the fact that local government elections in certain parts of the country had been postponed due to the forthcoming World Cup cricket matches that commence on Saturday.
   
Sajith to visit every electorate

UNP front-liner Sajith Premadasa has decided to participate in at least one election rally at every electorate, MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said yesterday.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting at the Nugegoda residence of Mr. Bandara. Party sources said that the meeting was also attended by MPs Dayasiri Jayasekara, Sujeewa Senasinghe and former MP Ranjith Aluvihare. (Read More)
   
Stop UPFA from flouting election laws or face legal action, UNP gives Polls Chief a choice

The UNP is scheduled to meet Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake to complain against violations by the ruling UPFA of election laws. The UNP says the government continues to flout election laws with impunity by abusing its privileged position much to the detriment of the Opposition parties including the UNP.

He says all appeals to the relevant authorities including the Police to put an end to illegal practices by the government in the run-up to the March 17 LG polls have fallen on deaf ears and the Opposition is left with no alternative but to seek the Election Commissioner’s intervention to rein in the UPFA.

UNP calls for explanation from SLMC

The UNP has sought explanation from its coalition partner the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and its leader Rauf Hakeem as to why they had acted in breach of the electoral agreement between the two parties and voted with the government in Parliament.

In a letter dated February 3, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has said that the SLMC had continued to violate the directions of the UNP whip in Parliament and therefore asked explanation as towhy the party should not take disciplinary action against the SLMC MPs. (Read More)
   
Govt. making false promises: Mangala

The main opposition UNP yesterday charged that the Government was attempting to woo the voters at the local government elections by making false promises to provide jobs.UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera said the Government had resorted to this action several times before but the promises were never fulfilled.

“During previous occasions the Government gave out job vacancy forms assuring the people that they would receive jobs, but this never became a reality. We find that they have begun handing out forms again just to get the vote,” he said. (Read More)
